How is text formatting in text editor different from HTML text formatting?

Normal text stored in text files though text files don't exclusively store normal text.  

Early days of computers normal text was shown using monospace font as a horizontal alignment and columnar formatting was sometimes done using whitespace characters.

Editing a text has more to do with content.  

For example initiating changes to word/sentence that change entire meaning fully.
