It’s less of Asia vs Australia.

The seasons of the southern hemisphere are inverse of the northern hemisphere. This has to do with the proximity of the earth to the sun and the angle in which the Earth is tilted during those seasons.

During December, January, and February, the earth is generally closer to the sun, but the the northern hemisphere is tilted further away, hence colder weather during that time frame. During that same time, the southern hemisphere is closer towards the sun hence their warmer weather. As we move towards June, July, and August, the northern hemisphere will have shifted closer to the sun while the southern hemisphere will have moved further away, hence warmer in the north and cooler in the south.

To my recollection, the distance of the earth itself is not as relevant as which way the earth is tilting for it to affect the weather/seasons we experience.
