This happens because of a process called Diffusion.
When we cook something, the gas vapours produced have very less force of attraction between them and their velocity is very high. Therefore they move from an area of high concentration (food being cooked) to an area of low concentration (several metres away). This process is called diffusion and because of this process the aroma of the food cooled in the kitchen reaches us even if we are sitting several metres away from it.
This does not occur when the food is cold because there are no gas vapours in this case.
