How is the axis of the earth useful in lacting locating places on the globe?

The imaginary axis that can be conceived as a skewer through the Earth is handy in setting the reference points of poles. It's more natural to think that the axis exits the Earth at the poles than at the equator, for example. And from the poles you can imagine the latitude-longitude grid for locating places on Earth.
