Lok Sabha elections are held after every five years to elect the central government.

Below is the procedure:

• The entire country is divided into several constituencies. One member is elected from each constituency.

• The elected member becomes the member of the Parliament or MP.

• After the elections to the Lok Sabha are held, the party which has the majority of elected members is invited to form the Government.

• In India, the Lok Sabha has 543 elected members (apart from two nominated members).

• A party which has at least half of the number, i.e. 272 members, forms the Government at the Centre. All the other parties form the opposition in the Parliament.

The leader of the party which secures the majority of seats in the Parliament become the Prime Minister. The PM then distribute portfolios to other elected party members.

• When no party gets a majority, then two or more parties come together to form a coalition government at the center.
