The concentration of hydronium ions decreases when an acid is dilutedbecause on adding water the H+ ions of theacid and hydroxyl ions of water react to form water molecules and the concentration of hydronium ions decreases.

When water is added to acid, the concentration of the hydronium decreases because, when we add water to acid, the H+ ions of the acid and the hydroxyl ions of the water which is used to dilute the acid react with each other to form water molecules and hence, as a result, the concentration of Hydronium ions decreases.
