The light effect on a semiconductor is exactly similar to the heat effect on asemiconductor. When a small amount of external energy in the form of lightis applied to the semiconductor, the valence electrons gain enough energy to break the bonding with the parent atom and they jumps into theconduction band.

heya..

The electrical conductivity of a semiconductor increases when light falls on it as when the light rays falls on it..the temperature increases

and with increase in temperature the electrons overcome the energy barrier between the valence band and the conduction band easily.

hope helped..
