Asia is the world's largest continent stretching from the Black Sea in the west to Japan in the east. It has an area of approximately 44.5 million sq.km. which is about one third of the total land area of the world. Latitudinally, Asia extends from 10°N, and the longitudinal extent is 25°E to 170°W. The length of the coastline is approximately 129,077 km. Asia is a continent of diverse features. Based on the regional topography and resources, Asian countries have been grouped into five regions:

1. South West Asia - Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Oman, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait.

2. Republics of Former USSR - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

3. South East Asia - East Timor, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Brunei.

4. East Asia - Japan, China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea.

5. South Asia - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
