The continental drift theory states that earth's crust is divided into several tectonic plates which float around. But a question arises that why don't the crust sink, after all it's too heavy. It is seen that the crust is mainly composed of silicates and aluminates (SIAL), and lies below is the denser layer of silicates and magnesium compounds (SIMA). Since, the SIAL is lighter than SIMA, the tectonic plates float without sinking. And that's why I am safely able to type this answer
