How is the dalai lama different from the Buddha?

I believe the Samanas taught that enlightenment can be reached through asceticism or rejection of the body and physical desire. I think Gotama wanted to learn independently rather than a prescribed teaching.Gotama had reached enlightenment and indulged in the self more than the others. He also refused to harm himself.
