How is the elbow proximal to the wrist but distal to the shoulder?

When both are distal to the shoulder, the wrist being more distal than the elbow. The elbow is proximal to the wrist. Distal means farther away and proximal means closer to. The elbow is proximal to the wrist but anatomy experts likely would not use the term that way.
