During gametogenesis [Fusion of male and female gametes] each gamete carries haploid sets of chromosomes [23 pairs] from both parents.

When both the gametes fuses then both haploid sets of chromosomes also fuses and creates a total of 46 chromosome in the zygote. [23+23= 46 chromosomes]

Hence, this is how both parents contribute equal genetic material to progeny.
