THE HEART IS ROUGHLY TRIANGULAR IN SHAPE. IT IS MADE UP OF SPECIAL MUSCLE CALLED CARDIAC MUSCLE. THE SIZE OF OUR HEART IS ABOUT THE SAME AS OUR ' CLENCHED FIST'. THE HEART HAS FOUR COMPARTMENTS CALLED CHAMBERS INSIDE IT. THE UPPER TWO CHAMBERS OF THE HEART ARE CALLED ATRIA, AND THE LOWER CHAMBERS ARE CALLED VENTRICLES.THE LEFT ATRUIM IS CONNECTED TO THE LEFT VENTRICLE THROUGH A VALVE1. SIMILARLY, THE RIGHT ATRIUM IS CONNECTED TO THE RIGHT VENTRICLE THROUGH VALVE2.THESE VALVES PREVENT THE BACKFLOW OF BLOOD INTO ATRIA WHEN VENTRICLES CONTRACT TO PUMP BLOOD OUT OF HEART TO REST OF THE BODY. A SHEATH OF TISSUE CALLED 'PERICARDIUM' PROTECTS THE MUSCULAR HEART.THE CHAMBERS OF THE HEART ARE SEPARATED BY A PARTITION CALLED SEPTUM.

HUMAN HEART :

》Human Heart is mesodermal in origin.

》It is located in the thoracic cavity between the lungs.

》It is protected by pericardium which is a double walled membrane enclosing pericardial fluid.

》Our heart consists of four chambers - two upper chambers called atria and two lower chambers called ventricles.

》A thick walled septum called the inter-ventricular septum separates the left and right ventricles.

》A thin septum called inter-atrial septum separates right and left atria.

》Atrioventricular septum separates the atria and the ventricle of the same side.

》Bicuspid Valve regulates the opening between the left atrium and left ventricle.

》Tricuspid Valve regulates the opening between the right atrium and right ventricle.

FUNCTION :

● The function of Heart is to pump oxygenated blood to all the parts of our body and also to pump the deoxygenated blood from lungs to heart.
