Well there might be an answer both for old and a new times here. And there is both a physics and a navigation answer here. Physics explains the operation as a little bar magnet alligning itself with the earth’s own magnetic field. And though it has been used for thousands of years for navigation, it’s time is passing. It was a wonder then and is still, that the earth has a relatively steady magnetic pattern that gives such a simple tool its utility.
In older times, the compass was very high tech and there were few tools for navigation. The stars only came out at night and it might be stormy or cloudy. Plus the stars had there own difficulties. Stars required an amazing degree of sophistication and education. And keep in mind science in early days had not been extricated from superstition.
In the northern world, one thing only was very very simple and in common use, navigating with Polaris the North Star. Polaris was always true north, and its angle from the horizon was always the latitude.
Hope this will help you..... ✌
