A current carrying coil is placed with its plane in the magnetic meridian of the earth(north south direction) and a clockwise current is set up in the coil. According to right hand rule, when seen from east, the curled fingers shows the direction of current(here towards north) then thumb shows the direction(here west) of the magnetic field at its center.
