How is the method of cell to cell communication able to be so specific?

due to desmosomes in animal cell and plasmodesmata in plant cell

Cell to cell communication happens via receptors on the cell surface membrane. These receptors have a complimentary shape to the signal which is actually a chemical either on the surface of another cell or in the cytoplasm. If the signal fits this shape then the receptor recognizes it, or it won't respond.
