the reproductive cells undergo meiosis,i.e, the no. of chromosomes are reduced to half.in human cell, there r 46 chromosomes. when they undergo meiosis, the no. of chromosomes becum 23.both the sperm and egg has 23 chromosomes each in each cell. when the cells fuse and form zygote, total no. of chromosomes=no.of chromosomes in sperm+no.of chromosomes in egg
=23+23
=46
the zygote then undergoes mitosis where no. of chromosomes in each cell is maintained andeach cell in the human body thus has 23 pairs of chromosomes
=23+23
