The first thing is to determine in which direction is positive. Lets assume that North is positive. If the object's velocity is +5m/s, the object moves 5 meters north each second. On a graph of velocity versus time, the Slope of the graph is the objects acceleration. If the slope is positive, the object is acceleration but if negative the object is decelerating.

the number may be +ve because it is moving in straight line so it can also be said as displacement .
