Initially, the postmaster appears to be haughty, ill-tempered and insensitive with an inexpressive face and no sign of gentleness. he does not understands Ali's feelings and anxiety and considers him a mad man. At times he rebukes him calling him a pest and other rude names. But the postmaster undergoes a complete transformation when he himself faces the mental trauma of not getting any news of his sick daughter. Now being in Ali's shoes, he realises his pain and is full of remorse being a character of helplessness and sympathy for Dhumaketu.
