The President is elected indirectly by the members of electoral college consisting of the elected members of both the houses of Parliament. The elected members of legislative assembly and the states including the capital territory of Delhi and union territory of Pondicherry (Official name: as Puducherry).
The election of the President is held in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote and such election is done by secret ballot.
