The rock cycle is the set of processes by which Earth materials change from one form to another over time. The concept of uniformitarianism, which says that the same Earth processes at work today have occurred throughout geologic time, helped develop the idea of the rock cycle in the 1700s.

Uniformitarianism is nothing but it explains how geological processes take place in nature. It believes that all natural processes go in sequence and not occur as the result of abrupt or sudden changes .For example considering its relation with rock cycle, magma results in igneous rocks After weathering and erosion they will convert into sediments and sedimentary rocks. Further when deep buried in earth's crust under high pressure and temperature conditions they will convert into metamorphic rocks. It wont happen in sudden. You wont get metamorphic rocks the very first day.
