Sea level is the initial level of seas on earth. To measure the heights of mountains and depths of oceans the scientist decided to use sea level.
However, measuring sea level is not an easy task. For this purpose a device called tide gauge is used. It is a large, long pipe with a small hole below the waterline. The pipe is also known as stilling well. The main idea is that the level of water outside the pipe even changes but there is no effect inside the pipe. The sea level could be measured accurately. This is done by taking a reading every day for almost a year and then finding the average of the readings.
Modern techniques of measuring sea level include use of satellites. However it also suffers from many problems, the solution is to take the reading for a long period of time and then taking out the average.

- The level of sea will be either moving or stand still
- As this result of this phenomenon, the leavel of the sea will be either raising or falling
- After the level of the sea and the mean sea level us calculated
- Scientists, over a period observed this and came to an final average mean sea level which is called as Mean Sea Level (M.S.L)
