the sex of a baby is determined by its chromosome make-up at conception. an embryo with two x chromosomes will become a girl, while an embryo with an x-y combination results in a boy.

  • Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, out of which 1 pair is called sex chromosomes termed as X and Y.
  • Males have one X and one Y chromosome and females have two X chromosomes.
  • The unfertilized egg contains one X chromosome and if a sperm containing Y chromosome fertilises the egg, then the baby is a boy.
  • If a sperm containing X chromosome fertilises the egg, then the baby is a girl.
