The sex of a newborn is always determined by its Father. If the baby contains the XY Cromosome then, it's a boy, if it contains XX Cromosome then it's a girl. The father of the newborn actually decides the sex of the child, because during a sexual intercourse if the 'Y' Cromosome passes then, it would be a boy and if 'X' Cromosome passes then its a girl.

A mother's Cromosome always contains'X' , but its upon the father to determine its offspring's sex.
