A male has XY chromosomes and produces two types of male gametes. Half of the male gametes carry X chromosomes and the other half carry Y chromosomes. A female carries XX sex chromosomes, hence all the female gametes carry only X chromosomes. when a sperm fertilises the egg -

a) When a sperm carrying X chromosome fertilises an egg, the resulting zygote develops into a female / girl (XX).

b) When a sperm carrying Y chromosome fertilises an egg, the resulting zygote develops into a male / boy (XY).
