The small intestine is narrow in order to ensure that each and every particle of food ( chunk of food ) is absorbed into cells of the body. Moreover, the surface area of the inner walls of small intestine is far more than that of large intestine. The surface area is increased due to the presence of small projections called villi which are so characterized to especially absorb each chunk of food.
