1. The speed of early printers was measured in units of characters per minute (cpm) for character printers, or lines per minute (lpm) for line printers. Modern printers are measured in pages per minute (ppm).
2. USB drive: Also known as pen drive or flash stick works as both input device to computer and as an output device. USB drives receive or save data from a computer as an input and it can also send data to a computer or another device.
3. Secondary storage is non-volatile , long-term storage. Without secondary storage all programs and data would be lost the moment the computer is switched off.
4. RAM, which stands for random access memory, and ROM, which stands for read-only memory, are both present in your computer. RAM is volatile memory that temporarily stores the files you are working on. ROM is non-volatile memory that permanently stores instructions for your computer.
5. A Computer Port is an interface or a point of connection between the computer and its peripheral devices. ... In Computers, communication ports can be divided into two types based on the type or protocol used for communication. They are Serial Ports and Parallel Ports.
6.
(a) A dot matrix printer is much more costly and prints black and white. Answer:A laser printer is much faster and still cheaper to operate than an inkjet, but cannot create carbon copies and the toner cartridges are expensive even if they last a long time.
(b) Impact printers form images and characters by striking a mechanism such as a print hammer or wheel against an inked ribbon, leaving an image on paper. Non-impact printers form characters and images without direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and the paper.
(c) While OCR seeks to understand all printed characters in a document, bar code recognition seeks to understand only characters that are bar codes, which are lines of varying thickness. ICR is more general than OCR, seeking to recognize hand printed alpha-numeric characters, and certainly machine printed ones.
7. Voice input device A device in which speech is used to input data or system commands directly into a system. Such equipment involves the use of speech recognition processes, and can replace or supplement other input devices.
8. A motherboard is the main printed circuit board in general-purpose computers and other expandable systems. It holds and allows communication between many of the crucial electronic components of a system, such as the central processing unit and memory, and provides connectors for other peripherals.
