Gabi, her mom, and her cousin Max are Jews living during the time of WW2. A friend picks them up his pickup truck and brings them to a church in Switzerland. From there, they make their way to a small farm and find their new living conditions- a carved in spot in the hayloft of a barn. It's not big enough for them to stand up and barely big enough for them to completely stretch out. They know they shouldn't complain since the family is risking their lives by hiding them but it is hard to be quiet and patient! Max has such a hard time with the silence and inactivity that he convinces Gabi to leave for a late night walk. Thinking themselves alone in the forest, they are surprised when they hear voices. They have discovered a group of soldiers watching over prisoners that are making a road. The next time Max and Gabi go for their midnight walk, they are discovered by a group of partisan soldiers. Max and Gabi, and now the grand daughter of the family with which they are staying, are recruited as spies for the partisan group. The three young people deliver food, clothing, and whatever news they can to the partisans. After 16 months of staying at the farm, the Jewish family rejoices with the rest of the world when the Nazi invasion is defeated. The war has ended!
