The title "a face in the dark" is appropriatein an ironical way. The author describes the dullness and the eerie setting in the story to set a "dark" ambience. A literal face in the dark is nothing but a sphere, as one's features cant be seen in the dark, and as we know, the boy mr. Oliver encounters in tge forest is nothing but a sphere. Hence eventhough one might wonder that mr. Oliver sees the boy under the light of the lantern, it was nothing but a- "Face in the dark"
