The Sangha owes its existence to the rules laid down by the Buddha in the Tripitaka. In other words, Buddhist monks that form the Sangha can be ordained and remain in their monkhood only because of the Vinaya. The Vinayapitaka contains the rules and regulations for the maintenance of the Sangha.
