How is the valency of an atom related to its electronic configuration?

The valency of an atom refers to the number of electrons within it's outer (valence) shell. The number of valence electrons will determine the last number of the atom's electron configuration. For example: Calcium has an electron configuration of 2,8,8,2 simply put, and has 2 valence electrons. The valency on atom also determines the reactivity and chemical properties of the particular element
