population of organisms fill well defined places or niches in the ecosystem.
- however , niches can change.
- temperature on earth can go up and down due to meteor hits , etc.
- if there was a particular population of organisms living in a particular niche and the niche was suddenly drastically changed , then their entire population would be wiped out.
- however , if there were some variations in few of these organisms , then they would have a chance to survive an they would survive and that species wont go extinct.
- hence variations are useful for a species in the long run.
