Winnowing is a process of separating grains from the chaff.
The mixture of two is shaken on a height and the grains fall off on the ground (since the grains are heavy) and the chaff gets displaced.The chaff gets displaced by the wind The blow of air takes it to the other side (since the chaff is lighter in weight). So air is required to displace the chaff.
