Explanation:

I’ve personally worked with about 15 undergraduates in my tenure as a PhD student and candidate, and I was an Undergraduate Researcher myself when I was an undergrad. From my experiences, I think these are the most beneficial aspects of being involved in research. To note, I’m a chemist, so the work I do is going to vary compared to say a Computer Science Researcher or a Biologist. Be that as it may.

First and foremost, Research brings the classroom into the laboratory. The concepts discussed therein are grounded in the work you see happening right before your eyes. Beer’s law isn’t just an exponential function; it’s your solution going from deep blue to pasty white. Solubility rules translate to “oh, the solid I put in that flask didn’t dissolve into solution.” The response values aren’t just made up so to be convenient; you’re looking at raw research data. Positive results actually mean something.

Research gets students thinking about the process of materials synthesis and design from a practical approach. For example, synthesis can be explained by the nomenclature of organic chemistry, but the evidence for your explanation comes from mixing substances and analyzing the yield in NMR. Furthermore on that line, synthesis is hardly ever clean: here’s how you run a column (you also learn how to dread running columns).

Research gives the students the opportunity to experience what they’re getting themselves into. Not everyone has the temperament and finesse necessary to become a bench scientist. It’s good to find that out before you receive your degree.

If you’re a part of a group that uses your results in a publication, Research will land you a co-authorship. These look mighty fine on graduate school applications.
