The Khilafat Movement (1919-1924) or the Indian Muslim Movement was started by the Muslims in British India to restore the authority of the Ottoman sultan as the Caliph of Islam after the First World War. Mahatma Gandhi had supported the Khilafat Movement with all his might. As a result the Muslim League lost its popularity and Muslim political leadership was taken from secular leaders like Jinnah by orthodox religious leaders. This also led to Muslim fanaticism and frenzy and many lives were lost in the process. The Hindus also turned against the Indian Muslims. Thus the Khilafat Movement proved that Hindus and Muslims were two different nations as they could not maintain their unity and paved the way for the formation of Pakistan.
