In a gel electrophoresis set up, the lane 1 consists of undigested dna fragments whereas the lanes 2 to 4 consist of digested dna fragment.
In a gel electrophoresis technique separation of DNA fragments can be done as per their size.
All DNA samples are first put into wells or indentations at an end of a gel.
An electric current is then put in place to pull within the gel.
The DNA pieces are negatively charged and hence they are pulled towards the positive electrode.
Since all DNA fragments have more or less, the same amount of charge per mass, therefore tiny fragments move at a faster rate through the gel compared to large ones.
