All of us know that sun is the ultimate source of energy and the movement of earth around the sun and it’s tilt position on its axis are responsible for duration of days and nights.
The earth receives maximum radiation on the equator and moving north ward or southward from equator reduces the amount of solar radiation and the time period of receiving solar light, affecting the length of day and nights.
On a fine day on 21st March the sun is at equator but from the day next it starts a northward shift and reaches the tropic of cancer on 21st June, this being the longest day and shortest night of northern hemisphere or you can say its reverse too i.e. shortest day and longest night of southern hemisphere.
After 21st June the sun starts a southward shift and it takes approx 3 months to reach it again on equator i.e. 22nd or 23rd September. This is supposed to be a day of 12 hours and a night of 12 i.e. days and nights are equal all over the globe.
Now, the sun movers further downward and reaches Tropic of Capricorn on 22nd December.
This process goes on round the year just like a pendulum.
And on the poles this causes a day of 6 months and a night of next six months.
