Leaves of coconut, palm etc are in great demand in making temporary housing in villages. Leafy food is good in vitamins, minerals, trace elements, useful fibre along with important dietary carbohydrates.

Leaves provide food and air to help a plant stay healthy and grow. Through photosynthesis, leaves turn light energy into food. Through pores, or stomata, leaves “breathe” in carbon dioxide and “breathe” out oxygen.

  1. Leaves as food: cabbage and other leafy vegetables are good human food. Sizable quantity of our daily food consists of one or other kind of leaves. Human diet with more leafy material is considered to be a healthy food. Leafy food is good in vitamins, minerals, trace elements, useful fibre along with important dietary carbohydrates.
  2. Leaves as medicine: Large number of Ayurvedic medicines are derived from leaves. Leaves of neem, hibiscus, tulsi (basil), Aloe, papaya, and numerous others are used by us almost daily.
  3. Leaves for scented oils: Mentha, mint, geranium ois etc are derived from leaves.
  4. Leaves as fodder: Grasses, sorghum, pearl millet, berseem, lucerne, khejari, maulshree, etc are good fodder for dairy animals, goats, sheeps, camel etc.
  5. Leaves for mats etc: Leaves of khajur, coconut etc are useful raw material for cottage industry. Mats, hand held fans etc and numerous decorative items are made from leaves.
  6. Leaves for making temporary shelters: Leaves of coconut, palm etc are in great demand in making temporary housing in villages.
  7. Leaves as insecticides: Tobacco, chrysanthemum, neem, dharek and large number of other plants are used for making insecticides from their leaves. Leaf derived Insecticides like nicotine and pyrethrins being safer are in great demand.

Above stated uses of leaves are all man made and side uses. Major role leaves play in nature include photosynthesis, air purification, plant respiration, water regulation, providing shades and protection to plant.
