It takes longer for the body to make more red blood cells — usually between 4 to 6 weeks. Red blood cells get their color from hemoglobin. Hemoglobin contains iron, so when a person donates blood, some of this iron is lost. It can take 6 to 12 weeks for levels to return to normal
