how long should be the ladder which one would need in order to reach a window 12m high given that the foot of ladder can be placed at a maximum distance of 5m away from the wall

It can be found by using pythagoras theoram

(height of window will be perpendicular and distance between the wall and the ladder is base)

height of the window=12m

distance between the wall and the ladder =5m

pythagoras theoram: H^2=P^2+B^2

                                 = H^2=(12)^2+(5)^2

                                 = 144+25   [We know that the sq. of 12=144 and sq of                                                                                                   5 = 25]

                                 = H^2=169

                                 = H  = sq root of 169

                                 =  H  =13m
