The opposite poles of two magnets attract. When the red end of a magnet or compass is pointing north it is because it is being attracted in that direction by the south end of another magnet often coloured blue this is the imaginary magnet inside the earth.

We all know that the compass indicate north pole and South pole. Then the question arises that why not the north pole repels with the north.
The answer is that actually, the side of the magnet is south. This is the reason why it attracts north pole.

1) geographical directions
2) magnetic direction.
