In case if only one equation is given, then there can be infinite solutions to the variable pair.

In case if you are given two, these are the possibilities (Note that I shall use a, b, c and :

1. If one equation is (suppose) ax+by=c, and the second equation can be shown in the form d(ax+by)=dc, then there are infinite solutions. If graphed, the lines track the same path.

2. If the equations are not as in the first condition and are solvable, then is only one solution. If graphed, the lines intersect at only one point.

3. If the equations are not as in the first condition but are unsolvable or inconsistent with the given equations in any way, then there is no solution. In that case, the lines depicting the possible solutions of each of the equations would be parallel.
