Explanation:

Glycolysis requires two moles of ATP to split one mole of glucose. However, glycolysis subsequently produces four moles of ATP, resulting in net gain of two moles of ATP for each mole of glucose.

Glycolysis is an anaerobic process. Yet, an oxidizing agent is still required. NAD+ is used for this purpose.

In the oxidation step of glycolysis, NAD+ is reduced to NADH. Fermentation is the process of regenerating the oxidizing agent NAD+ from NADH so that glycolysis can process more glucose and generate more ATP.

Fermentation directly produces no ATP, nor consumes it.
