A carbon atom can form Four (4) bonds.

- The atomic no of C is 6

- The electronic configuration of carbon is 1s², 2s²2p².

- In the valence shell, both 2s and 2p orbital have 2 electrons.

- Actually, 2px and 2py orbitals have one electron each and 2pz orbital is vacant.

- During bond formation, one electron of 2s orbital can jump to the 2pz orbital.

- Due to this, it has 4 unpaired electrons and hence it can form 4 bonds.
