The appendicular skeleton lies laterally and is attached to the axial skeleton at an specific angle. It has a total of "126 bones" present in four complexes- pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, arm bones and leg bones. The pectoral girdle and the arm (the forelimbs) bones constitute the upper part of the extremity while pelvic girdle and leg (the hind limbs) bones form th lower part of the extremity. Limbs end in a total of five digits. They are, therefore, also callled or known as, pentadactyl .In pecotral girdle they have a total of 2 clavicles and 2 scalpuale. In arm bones they have the following bones, humerus, radius, ulna, a total of 8 carpals, 5 number of metacarpals and 14 phalanges in total (30*2). In pelvic girdle there are, 2 innominates (each of them with one ilium, ischium, pubis). Lastly, the leg bones contain the following bones, Femur, patella (or the knee cap), fibula, tibia, a total of 7 tarsals, 5 number of metatarsals and 14 number of phalanges (this too is, 30*2). The skeleton is supportive in function.
