To Find:

The number of matches that will be played such that there is no opponent to a particular team.

Solution:

1. It is given that initially, 15 teams have started playing the knockout tournament.

2. Consider the 15 teams numbered from 1 to 15.

3. In the first round let two consecutive teams face each other,

=> (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 6), (7, 8), (9, 10), (11, 12), (13, 14) face each other for the first match whereas team 15 remains idle.

4. For the first round team 15 can be given a bye. Hence, the total byes as of now are 1.

5.  Consider only even-numbered teams have qualified in round 1 and the rest are eliminated. Hence in round2 teams 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 15 face each other. ( 8 teams compete in round 2).

6. For round 3 only 4 teams will be qualified, for round 4 only 2 teams will be qualified and only 1 team will win in the 4th round. Hence, only 1 bye is required to complete the tournament.

Therefore, only 1 bye is required.
