Let’s assume that you have to line this 2cm cubes up on a 6cm line. One of them would take 2cm, two would take 4cm, three takes 6cm… and we’re out of space. Three so far.

Now we’ll lay out a 6cm by 6cm square. We already know three 2cm cubes fit on one side of this square, so it would be three cubes wide and three cubes deep… three rows of three cubes. Nine cubes so far.

Now we’ve arrived at the 6cm cube. We know that the big cube is three small cubes wide and three deep, which means it will be three cubes tall. Three layers of the nine cubes make twenty-seven cubes total.
