Answer: 6 districts.

Explanation:

The British forces occupied Assam after the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1824. Soon on 24th February in 1826 it was surrendered to Britain by Burma.

Assam became the part of Bengal between 1826 and 1832 under the Bengal. During the period spanning from 1832 to 1838 October, the princely state of Assam was reinstated in Upper Assam while the Lower Assam was ruled by British.

The British imposed their political control on the Western Naga communities during 1873.  Assam, including Sylhet was detached from Bengal on 6th February 1874 to give shape to the Assam Chief-Commissionership, which was also referred as the 'North-East Frontier'.

In 1874 September, Shillong was  made the capital of the Non-Regulation Province of Assam . On 7th February the British included the six districts of Brahmaputra valley namely Kamrup, Darrang, Nagaon, Sibsagar , Goalpara and Lakhimpur.

Hope this helps.
