Number of emission lines observed in lyman series when electron jumps from 5th energy level are 10.

We know for lyman series n1= 1 that is electrons from any exited state that is from any shell comes to the first shell.

So for lyman series n1 is always 1 and n2 that is from where electron jump can be any shell that is n2 can be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on, so in this case n2= 5.

Hence n1 = 1 and n2 = 5

To calculate number of spectral lines in transition of electron from n2 to n1we have:--

Number of lines= [(n2- n1)(n2- n1+ 1)]/2

When n1 is 1 the formula is modified as :--

Number of lines = n(n- 1)/2 where n = 5

Substituting values we have:-- 5*(5-1)/2 = 5*4/2 = 10.

Hence number ofof emission lines observed in lyman series when electron jumps from 5th energy level are 10.
