Taylor recommended eight foremen to control various aspects of production.
The reason why he recommended more foremen:
- According to Taylor, one employee or supervisor cannot be expected to be an expert in every area. He, therefore, argued for the hiring of eight foremen to supervise employees in the planning and production areas.
- According to his observation, it is impossible for a single worker to be a master in each and every aspect of production. Therefore he insisted that eight persons should be performing the duties of a foreman and this kind of work came to be known as functional foremanship.
- Taylor recommends using a functional foremanship approach. It states that in order to increase the caliber and effectiveness of workers, various foremen who are experts in their profession should supervise each worker.
